Centralized Traffic Routing
This project optimizes traffic throughput in urban road networks through centrally coordinated vehicle routing. Traffic congestion during rush hours causes major economic losses, often reaching billions of euros per year, and creates significant health risks due to pollution. Our methods reduce these effects by using a global network view to allocate vehicles more efficiently, overcoming key shortcomings of decentralized routing strategies commonly used in modern navigation systems. The routing algorithms are implemented in a dedicated framework integrated with the SUMO traffic simulator and evaluated on realistic metropolitan and real-world datasets, including online route assignment scenarios for large urban areas.
